"Could you bring out a couple of bikes that the Ferrari guys might appreciate?" asked Eric Rassmusan from Cavallino, the annual Ferrari convention in Palm Beach, FL. I took these photos at the end of the day after the Friday track day at Moroso Motorsports Park of the three bikes we brought out for display. These three bikes are personal favorites, rare and special - all three began life in Bologna, traveled to other countries and ended up here in the USA. One, the 175SS literally changed my life. It's my absolute favorite machine. Turns out Sandhill Cranes like it too....

Three bikes are what fits in the trailer so three bikes it had to be. These three are favorites so a day spent looking at them in the Palm Beach sunshine seemed like quality time.
This is my 1959 175SS. Restored by Jim Dillard for me "pre eBay" (meaning back when this wasn't so easy to pull off) this is the Ducati I love the most. Originally shipped to Argentina, it ended up here in boxes and was sold to me as part of a package. This model is considered the DNA for all Ducati's to come, it's among the most memorable and best loved models, much rarer than the similar chrome tanked 200 Elite.
If you ask me, it doesn't have a bad angle. It's my view most mornings, when not on loan to an exhibit it sleeps at the foot of my bed.
It changed my life because it inspired me to enter the Motogiro d'Italia, and introduced me to interesting people, kick starting and a completely different mindset about riding. Less horsepower means you can make less mistakes, there's no way to cover up a lack of skill like you can with a big hand full of throttle. And then, of course, there's the sense of history it inspires when you look at it.
This is called a "Jelly Mold" tank. It's design was inspired by the shape of the tucked in riders arms molding into the sides of the tanks. The brackets on the top of the tank are parcel loops so things can be strapped to the top of the tank for carrying.
Depending on the model, 175's could have come with a single pipe or a double pipe. I hand carried this set of Silentium's back from Italy.
Convert the photo to black and white and it's 1959 just like that.
