Motogiro d'Italia 2006 - Italy - This is what heaven must be like
This is what heaven looks like....
Motogiro d'Italia. 5 days of magic in the Italian countryside, where time runs backward and everywhere you look it could be 1959. 2006 was my 6th wonderful adventure among friends gathered worldwide. Perfect weather, challenging roads, staggering sceanery, it was everything you could hope for, a moto-junkies dream come true. This years route took us from Rimini at the sea to the Marche region, Umbria (Ancona and Ascoli)to the top of the highest mountain in Italy, past snow caps and wildflowers, every mile bathed in sunshine. The photos and captions in this gallery reflect the event as well as an attempt to document the types and variety of motorcycles that participated in an effort to help others considering the event better understand the many choices.

Those are truffles in truffle cream on toasted bread. Each stop is sponsored by the local town or moto club. This town specialized in truffles that were in season all year. Simply delicious and all you could eat.
Truffles look like brown rocks but taste like heaven!
Mike Walk, Bit Grubbstrom and Rich Lambrechts share a moment in Ancona. Mike and Bit were first time Motogiro participants, both good riders, they each told me after the event they felt it raised the skill level they came to Italy with. This is not unusual, I find the same thing myself every year. There is nowhere in the US that truly equals this type of riding.
Morning in Ancona, the view from the Hotel Touring was sky blue and miles of sea.
The "usual suspects", from left: Mark Loveland, Jim Dillard, Rich Lambrechts, Vicki Smith, Chris Jensen, and Steve Mahanes. Mark, Chris and Steve are "Team Leone" as in Reno Leone, just one of the many people who make up both Ducati's deep racing history and this event as well. You can't swing a cat by the tail here and not hit a former GP rider or factory tester or some other notorious fast guy of one sort or another.
Steve Mahanes and Chris Jensen take a break between ride legs.
"English Pete", one of the many characters this event produces, he never missed a chance to crack a joke or a smile.
Mario Sassi and friend. Mario is known for his trick Ducati parts, his beautiful bikes and his speedy riding style.
Carl Liebold strikes a pose. This is Carl's third year in the vintage class and his first year on this lovely Edoardo Vannucchi prepared Mondial.
